JOB TITLE: Yard Laborer
REPORTS TO: Ferrous Operations Manager
JOB TYPE: Full-time, Non-Exempt
LOCATION: 127 Fillmore Ave. Buffalo NY, 14210
HOURS: Monday-Friday 7:00AM-4:00PM, overtime and Saturdays as needed.
COMPENSATION: $17-19/hour, based on experience and skills.

Purpose: The Yard Laborer is responsible for safely and efficiently maintaining the yard and the surrounding facilities.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Load and unload scrap metal materials.
  • Clean and prepare job site in a tidy and safe manner.
  • Inspect, grade and direct scrap material being received over the scale.
  • Weigh in & weigh out railcars.
  • Move material via bobcat, loader and yard truck around the yard.
  • Assist Heavy Equipment Mechanic with a variety of projects throughout the region as needed.
  • Use a variety of tools and machines: blowtorches, forklifts, lifts, power drills, grinders, saws, pressure washers, and water spraying equipment.
  • Sort and process scrap metal according to grade and size.
  • Communicate with managers, supervisors, co-workers, and customers clearly and respectfully.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding and carry out simple one or two-step instructions.
  • Ensure that Quality, Environmental, and Safety Standards of Metalico, Inc. for production, customers and employees are consistently achieved.
  • Must be able to work assigned schedule.
  • Must be able to perform a variety of tasks in all kinds of weather/seasons.
  • Required to wear proper PPE (safety-toed boots, hard hats, safety glasses). 
  • Performs other tasks as assigned or requested.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Industry experience in scrap metal preferred.
  • Able to operate bobcats, forklifts, loaders are a plus.
  • Ability to work inside or outside as required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must be safety-oriented and exhibit safe work habits.
  • Punctual and reliable; good attendance required.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn new skills; must be willing to cross-train on other equipment.
Physical Demands:
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
  • Awareness of surroundings (able to see, hear, talk), moving equipment, employees, etc.
  • Move about a salvage yard on uneven terrain.
  • Standing, sitting, walking, squatting, bending, lifting, reaching, and grasping.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools.
  • Lifts up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist level and is able to carry such objects for at least 30 feet.
  • Physically able to participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings.

  • Outside work in the Yard is where temperature and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain) may be encountered.

  • Work will take place in an industrial environment, with noise, dust and fumes. 
  • Noise levels in the work environment can be moderate at times; hearing protection is always provided to employees by the company.
